Lena — A Reliable Resource with a Bright Smile

By Tasha Romo

For many seniors in Humboldt County, navigating access to essential services can feel overwhelming. Complex applications, online systems, long wait times and confusing government notices can create barriers that prevent older adults from accessing the help they need and deserve.

But countless community members have found someone they can rely on — Lena Park-Segura, a dedicated social worker at Humboldt Senior Resource Center (HSRC) who is available to provide compassionate support for seniors on a wide range of issues.

Every day, Lena works one-on-one with older adults to help them connect to vital programs that support their health, financial stability and independence. One of the most significant areas where she makes a difference is assisting seniors with CalFresh, a critical program that helps stretch limited food budgets and ensure consistent access to nutritious meals.

For older adults, the CalFresh process can be particularly challenging. Many are unfamiliar with how to fill out online applications, unsure about their eligibility or worried about gathering verification documents. Lena walks them through each step, including help reviewing the requirements, completing forms, troubleshooting issues and she will communicate with agencies on their behalf when needed.

Her guidance doesn’t end once someone is approved for services. She continues providing support so seniors can retain their benefits, avoid lapses and stay informed about any changes that might affect them.

Lena’s work extends far beyond CalFresh. She helps seniors connect to a wide range of community resources — transportation assistance, nutrition programs, in-home support options and other services that improve quality of life. She takes the time to understand each person’s unique situation, offering not just information but also reassurance, advocacy and encouragement, and a dependably bright smile.

Seniors often describe Lena as a “lifeline” who makes difficult systems feel manageable and who treats every individual with respect and dignity. She helps reduce their stress, increases stability and confidence, and connects older adults to the support that allows them to age safely and comfortably in the community they love.

For anyone feeling overwhelmed, unsure where to start, or simply in need of a knowledgeable guide, Lena is here to help. If you or someone you know could benefit from Lena’s support, please call her at 707-443-9747. Help is just a phone call away.

We all too often forget and cannot neglect life’s demons. They cannot be eradicated without seriously believing that they are real. Femicide is such a demon. The term “femicide” is rarely used in official U.S. statistics, as murders of women are normally categorized as homicides. According to a U.N. study, fe...

To the Editor: Were you perplexed as I was over the May “Health in Humboldt 2026” issue of Senior News? As in this issue, recent local forums have addressed the current defective state of healthcare availability in Humboldt County. While pertinent questions have been asked along with recognition that our curr...

To the Editor: I want to thank Dr. Heidmann for her March column “What is Good Health?” As a participant of Redwood Coast PACE, I was encouraged by her words and insights. I live daily with chronic illness and pain, and her last paragraph has become a great way for me to focus on my health: “Good health is, a...
