Intimacy, Connection and Well-Being as We Age

By Samantha Day

The Behavioral Health services program at Humboldt Senior Resource Center (HSRC) supports mental and emotional well-being as an essential part of healthy aging. As February and Valentine’s Day invite reflection on love and relationships, it’s also a good time to talk about intimacy — what it means, how it changes and why it remains important throughout our lives.

Intimacy is not limited to romantic relationships. For many, it shows up as emotional closeness, companionship, trust, affection, shared memories and feeling understood by those around us. It can exist in long-term partnerships, new relationships, friendships, family connections and even in the relationship we have with ourselves.

Aging, health changes, caregiving roles, grief and life transitions can all shape how connected we feel and how comfortable we are expressing closeness.

Mental health plays a key role in intimacy. Anxiety, depression, stress and unresolved loss can create distance between people, while open communication and emotional support can strengthen connection.

HSRC’s Behavioral Health program offer a space to talk openly about relationship changes, loneliness, identity, boundaries and the emotional impact of caregiving or illness, topics that are common and meaningful, but often difficult to discuss elsewhere.

At HSRC, we believe that connection is fundamental to well-being at every stage of life. Supporting emotional health helps individuals maintain relationships, adapt to change and continue experiencing closeness, purpose and meaning as they age.

HSRC’s Behavioral Health program provides clients with a holistic approach to wellness. Our team of licensed professionals focuses on how a client’s social, emotional and physical domains interact with factors such as family, health care and housing — thus affecting overall well-being.

Those interested in HSRC’s Behavioral Health services are welcome to refer themselves to our program or can be referred by a family member, care provider or community partner. Any Humboldt County adult 55 and older is eligible to enroll. Group counseling is also available. A referral form is available on the HSRC website at humsenior.org. We accept numerous forms of insurance, as well as Medicare and private-pay options.

Individuals may also call 707-443-9747, x6108, or email BHS@humsenior.org to learn more about services, insurance options and next steps.

Samantha Day, DSW, LCSW, is HSRC’s director of Social Services.

We usually have a hard time finding good things to say about a person we find humorless. Beyond acknowledging that he or she is, perhaps, “hardworking” or “dependable as the day is long,” we end up at a descriptive loss for these folks pretty quickly. Since we know, as Thumper the rabbit used to say, if you d...

Just saying “April Fools’ Day” makes me smile. In my life, every day is already pretty darn foolish. But it’s nice to have a special day to laugh — an especially rare commodity over the past year or so, given that the world feels like it’s going to hell in a handbasket. I never did understand that saying, but...

The announcement arrived quietly, the way fog rolls into Humboldt Bay — soft at first, then everywhere. It’s 1961. Lewy, Larry, Gene and I are leaving Illinois for Florida. Maybe we’ll get to Fort Lauderdale where we imagine the beaches are lined with bikini-clad coeds. We will travel in Lewy’s well-primered ’52 Plymouth, which runs fine but needs regular refills of oil. We have virtually no money. We’ll be sle...
