Juneteenth Connects Past & Future
Black Humboldt and the NAACP, in collaboration with the Black community of Humboldt County and community partners, announce this year’s Juneteenth Cultural Festival, a multi-day celebration honoring emancipation through culture, education, art and community connection.
Events throughout the week of June 18-22 will focus on the theme “Honoring the Past to Seed the Future” with venues in Eureka, Arcata and Blue Lake. Pre-festival events include an art exhibit opening at Arts Alive in Eureka on Friday, June 5, and events and exhibits at Oysterfest in Arcata on Saturday, June 13.
The main events run from Thursday, June 18, through Monday, June 22, with a day-long festival on Saturday, June 20, from noon-7 p.m. at Halvorsen Park in Eureka, followed by an After Party until 1 a.m.
Juneteenth commemorates the moment in 1865 when news of freedom reached enslaved Black people in Galveston, Texas, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Locally, Juneteenth is both remembrance and renewal, a celebration of Black life, creativity and leadership in Humboldt County.
