Caring Grandparents in Fortuna
With the close of the school year, I want to highlight a wonderful program at one of our Eel River Valley Schools.
Redwood Prep Charter School in Fortuna has a Grandparents Group that is a helpful success story for the students, staff and seniors who participate.
The group started small a few years back, with volunteers reading with students in the classrooms on a oneon- one basis.
This mighty group of volunteers consists of retired educators, community members and, of course, grandparents of some of the students.
Many activities have evolved over the years, from reading with students to supporting all the kids and staff. A staff lunch is provided once a month to thank and show appreciation for the hard-working teachers and administrators. A monthly brunch for the classified staff is another show of caring to the important members who go the extra mile for everyone at Redwood Prep.
A fun activity is the monthly Friday cookie give away, as students prepare to go home for the weekend. It’s a great way to show the students some extra love. And the grandparents enjoy the connection as much as the kids.
Some of the grandparents’ other activities include driving for field trips, decorating for dances and donating to the annual gala fundraiser for extras for the school.
This group of caring senior volunteers make a difference for students in Fortuna. Volunteers also find it a wonderful social time for grandparents to meet others who want to help the next generation of community members.
This grassroots group saw a need to volunteer and help in an important area of our community — our schools. All schools could benefit from a group like this, caring people who show up to support our teachers and kids.
My friend Diane Garrison told me about this program and is willing to answer questions or give advice on how to start a Grandparents Group in your area. Feel free to contact her at 714-612-2281.
As a retired 30-year educator in the Fortuna Elementary School District, I have seen the changes in our families and students over the years. It would be wonderful to have a caring, loving and supportive program like the Grandparents Group in every school.
