VITA Tax Preparers Donate Expertise for Free Tax Help
Volunteer certified tax preparers will once again be available at Humboldt Senior Resource Center (HSRC) this year to help you get your tax forms filled out and filed.
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program has helped people with their taxes at sites nationwide for 50 years. The service helps low to moderate-income individuals and families get all the deductions and credits that are available to them.
Tax returns are prepared by IRS-certified volunteers and include federal and state returns. This program is for basic tax returns with less than $79,000 annual income that do not contain rental property or digital currency. Self-employment is okay if the business does not have paid employees, inventory or depreciation and does not operate at a net loss. Farm and married filing separate returns are not accepted.
Tax preparation sessions are appointment only at HSRC, 1910 California St., beginning Tuesday, Feb. 10, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. through Tuesday, April 14.
Call 707-443-9747, x1240, for an appointment.
You must bring a picture ID, a Social Security card or other government document with the name and SS number or ITIN for everyone on the tax return, and printed tax documents.
Free VITA tax preparation services will also be offered at the Fortuna Senior Center on Mondays throughout the tax season; call 707-726-9203 for appointments.
Appointments will also be available at Family Resource Centers in McKinleyville, Rio Dell and Willow Creek; call 707-572-5045 for appointments.
