Harvest Boxes — Fresh Veggies to Your Door!

By Hailee Nolte

Harvest Boxes are filled with fresh Humboldt-grown produce, delivered to your door weekly or bi-weekly from Fortuna to Trinidad, or available for pickup.

The locally grown produce comes from multi-farm-style CSAs (community- supported agriculture), bringing you the best seasonal offerings from multiple growers. Harvest Boxes include five to six items — lettuce, fruit, veggies, herbs — from farms in Willow Creek, Fortuna, Redcrest, Arcata and Ferndale, all in one box!

The cost is $30/box — or $15 for CalFresh recipients — for everyone who loves fresh healthy produce and wants to support local agriculture.

We asked one of our favorite customers, Gary Foster (and his little Jack Russell terrier sidekick, Zeke), why he likes Harvest Boxes.

Why did you sign up for the Harvest Box? “It’s a great value and it comes straight to my house!” Gary said.

What are some of your favorite items? “Salad greens, dried beans, leeks, corn, tomatoes, artichokes, snap peas. And any type of fruit! Fruit season in Humboldt, it’s the best,” Gary said. “Humboldt has a lot of interesting microclimates and the Harvest Box is able to extend the seasons and get more variety.”

What items have you received in a Harvest Box that you’d never had before? “I look up new ways to eat products such as purple sprouting broccoli, kohlrabi, rainbow carrots. I like getting to know new farms to see what product is from which farm.”

What’s a favorite recipe you discovered with the Harvest Box? “My favorite recipe in the winter is roasted veggies,” Gary said. “I use olive oil, feta, fennel and dried herbs, and then add sliced tomatoes to roast toward the end. The flavors all together are so good.”

Do you still go shopping during the week? “The Harvest Box lasts me the whole week and beyond, especially the hardy stuff,” he said. “I still go to the farmers’ market — the McKinleyville one is a fave because it’s so close — and to the grocery store for staples. It is helpful getting the list of items so I can fill in the blanks.”

We all too often forget and cannot neglect life’s demons. They cannot be eradicated without seriously believing that they are real. Femicide is such a demon. The term “femicide” is rarely used in official U.S. statistics, as murders of women are normally categorized as homicides. According to a U.N. study, fe...

To the Editor: Were you perplexed as I was over the May “Health in Humboldt 2026” issue of Senior News? As in this issue, recent local forums have addressed the current defective state of healthcare availability in Humboldt County. While pertinent questions have been asked along with recognition that our curr...

To the Editor: I want to thank Dr. Heidmann for her March column “What is Good Health?” As a participant of Redwood Coast PACE, I was encouraged by her words and insights. I live daily with chronic illness and pain, and her last paragraph has become a great way for me to focus on my health: “Good health is, a...
