Cat Correction

To the Editor:

My name is Caylx. I live with my sister, Corolla, in the home of Donna and Jim Clark in Eureka. My sister and I have serious objections to the last paragraph of “Pet Advice” [August Senior News, page 6].

I go out with Jim to get the paper every morning. While I don’t actually pick up the paper, I do survey the yard for stray cats. I come running when Jim calls. Corolla comes running, too, if we are both outside in the backyard enjoying the catnip.

When Corolla and I hear the garage door open, we wait by the back door to greet Jim or Donna when they come home. We sit up for treats and play silly games with them.

We love to sit on laps in the evening, or especially when Donna is trying to fold clothes. That is my favorite time to sit in her lap, gaze into her eyes and purr very loudly. Cats are wonderful companions, too.

Caylx the cat, Eureka

Editor’s Note: The offending paragraph in the August issue, “Animals Are People, Too,” reads: “If you want someone who will never come when you call, ignores you totally when you come home, leaves hair all over the place, walks all over you, runs around all night and only comes home to eat and sleep and acts as if your entire existence is solely to ensure his happiness, … then get a cat.” Senior News offers all due apology.

Music is good for us. This is a little hard to study with the same rigor as, say, whether penicillin or another antibiotic is best for a specific infection, but music has been studied and the physiological benefits are measurable. Music can reduce stress, blood pressure, pain and anxiety. Sometimes music can ...

Where do I even start? Ah, in utero! My mother was a cellist and played Bach Suites long before I was conceived. My father was a pianist and knew all the jazz standards of the 1930s and ’40s, before, as he would put it, my mother was a “glimmer in his eye.” Together, they played music hundreds of years old. I...
