The McKinleyville Community Choir

By Lori Cole

Humboldt County is home to a variety of choirs that give singers, musicians and audiences opportunities to enjoy many different kinds of music programs and genres.

One of these, the McKinleyville Community Choir, has performed during the winter and spring for over 20 years. With about 50 singers (we need tenors!), our programs include instrumentalists on drums, bass, flute, saxophone and bassoon.

There are no auditions to join, only a love of singing with others. We rehearse weekly on Thursday evenings under the direction of Jon Reisdorf, as well as three other members who lead us in uplifting and inspiring songs.

We typically learn a dozen songs each season, from Mozart and Bach to standards, pop, folk and spirituals. We always include songs in other languages — Latin, Spanish, Polish, Swahili and Hebrew — in addition to English.

We sing with joy, attracting many audience members who come to our performances year after year. This holiday season we will perform on Dec. 6 at Trinidad Town Hall, Dec. 13 at Grace Good Shepherd Church in McKinleyville and Dec. 20 at Azalea Hall in McKinleyville. All are free and begin at 3 p.m.

If you are interested in joining, contact our manager, Clare Greene (ccgreene46@gmail.com). Rehearsals are Thursdays from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Grace Good Shepherd Church, 1450 Hiller Road, McKinleyville. We look forward to sharing another season of holiday music with the community!

Lori Cole of Arcata has loved singing with the McKinleyville Community Choir since 2016.

Music is good for us. This is a little hard to study with the same rigor as, say, whether penicillin or another antibiotic is best for a specific infection, but music has been studied and the physiological benefits are measurable. Music can reduce stress, blood pressure, pain and anxiety. Sometimes music can ...
