Library at Your Door

Library at Your Door

By William Shreeve

To the Editor:

This letter comes in response to the great stories and experiences your writers so wonderfully shared with all your readers in the March issue [“The Reading Habit”]. I grew up around books. Our mother read us a story most nights before bedtime until we got into reading ourselves and checking out books at the library.

Speaking of the library, allow me to introduce you by a totally unsolicited, nonpaid advertisement concerning a great new service being offered by your Humboldt County Library. It is called “Library at Your Door.” When you sign up, you give them subjects, authors, print size, whatever your interest. The librarian in charge is very sharp in following your requests. With each free delivery, your books arrive in a nice blue library bag with a sharp knock on your door and a pickup of your last delivery.

Give them a call at 707-269-1954 or visit https://humboldtgov.org/3569/ Library-at-Your-Door for a lot more info about this service.

I still love going in person to the library when possible. Usually I don’t get past the “new arrivals” shelf. Surely Solomon spoke the truth when he said of the making of many books there is no end.

Give it a try. This service could open up an entirely new and unexplored reading experience for you.

We usually have a hard time finding good things to say about a person we find humorless. Beyond acknowledging that he or she is, perhaps, “hardworking” or “dependable as the day is long,” we end up at a descriptive loss for these folks pretty quickly. Since we know, as Thumper the rabbit used to say, if you d...

Just saying “April Fools’ Day” makes me smile. In my life, every day is already pretty darn foolish. But it’s nice to have a special day to laugh — an especially rare commodity over the past year or so, given that the world feels like it’s going to hell in a handbasket. I never did understand that saying, but...

The announcement arrived quietly, the way fog rolls into Humboldt Bay — soft at first, then everywhere. At exactly 9:00 a.m., every screen lit up with a cheerful message from TechGov, the benevolent administrative intelligence that now managed the nation’s well-being. Congratulations, citizens. Artificial Int...

It’s 1961. Lewy, Larry, Gene and I are leaving Illinois for Florida. Maybe we’ll get to Fort Lauderdale where we imagine the beaches are lined with bikini-clad coeds. We will travel in Lewy’s well-primered ’52 Plymouth, which runs fine but needs regular refills of oil. We have virtually no money. We’ll be sle...
