Humboldt Walks to End Alzheimer’s

The ALZ Steppers, Humboldt Senior Resource Center’s team in the annual Humboldt County Walk to End Alzheimer’s, invites everyone to step up to help combat this dreadful disease.

This year’s Walk is Saturday, Oct. 10, at the Adorni Center in Eureka, with opening ceremonies at 10:30 a.m. and the walk, either one or two miles, stepping off at 11.

Samantha Day, captain of the Alz Steppers team, is gearing up for this year’s effort to raise funds and awareness for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. “We’d love you to join the team or share info about the walk and our team’s fundraising efforts with others,” she said.

On the team website (act.alz.org/site/TR?team_ id=1045477& pg=team& fr_id=19468), the Alz Steppers invite others to join, turn out to walk on Oct. 10, and donate to fight Alzheimer’s.

“We take great pride in caring for those in our community with dementia and are pumped to raise funds for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s,” the website says. “We need your help to end this devastating disease. You can make an impact with a donation or even joining our team. Your kindness and generosity truly make a difference.”

Lynn McKenna, chair of the 2026 Humboldt County Walk to End Alzheimer’s, said, “This is a pivotal moment in the fight against Alzheimer’s. With new treatments and proven lifestyle habits that support brain health, there is real hope.

“Together, we can build a brain‑healthy future and help end this disease,” she said. “We invite everyone to join us by forming a team to raise awareness and funds for families facing Alzheimer’s.”

Nationwide, about 7.4 million Americans 65 and older have Alzheimer’s, a form of dementia, reports the Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org/). More than 3,000 of those live in Humboldt County, McKenna said, along with about 7,000 of their caregivers.

Music is good for us. This is a little hard to study with the same rigor as, say, whether penicillin or another antibiotic is best for a specific infection, but music has been studied and the physiological benefits are measurable. Music can reduce stress, blood pressure, pain and anxiety. Sometimes music can ...

Where do I even start? Ah, in utero! My mother was a cellist and played Bach Suites long before I was conceived. My father was a pianist and knew all the jazz standards of the 1930s and ’40s, before, as he would put it, my mother was a “glimmer in his eye.” Together, they played music hundreds of years old. I...
