Murmurations

By Evelyn Wiebe-Anderson

A murmuration of sanderlings

weave sea and sky together.

Synchronistic turning and twisting

too fast to follow

mirrors the rise and fall of waves.

Like raindrops they descend on

the darting tongue of the surf’s edge.

In staccato rhythm,

they speed along hard packed sand,

then quickly rise again

surging toward where we stand

in awe

only to part around us

like intelligent water.
